Mindfulness Programs in Coventry Schools 2026

How we reported this

Four primary schools in Coventry began offering weekly mindfulness classes to year five and six pupils on 6 July 2026.
Student wellbeing data from the city council shows referrals for anxiety support rose 18 per cent between 2023 and 2025, prompting headteachers to seek classroom tools that fit into existing timetables. The programmes use short breathing exercises and guided attention practices rather than full meditation retreats.
Named programmes at two Coventry sites
At Earlsdon Primary School on Earlsdon Avenue North, staff run a 15-minute session each Tuesday morning using the local Mindful Moments curriculum developed with Coventry University researchers. Pupils sit in the school hall near the playing fields and focus on noticing sounds from nearby Warwick Road traffic before returning to classwork.
Across town at Sidney Stringer Academy on Cox Street in the Hillfields area, a separate eight-week block started last month for 120 students. The academy partners with the Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust mental health team, which supplies trained facilitators every Friday afternoon in the school library.
Numbers behind the rollout
Council figures released in May 2026 recorded that 640 children across eight Coventry schools had already completed at least one term of the sessions. Each participating school receives a £2,400 grant to cover teacher training and basic mats, with the money drawn from the city’s 2025-26 public health budget allocation.
Parents can register children through the individual school offices or the Coventry City Council wellbeing portal before the next intake opens on 1 September. Families living in the Coundon or Radford wards receive priority booking for the limited after-school taster classes held at the Herbert Art Gallery education room on Jordan Well.
