Eastern Green is set to be transformed into one of Coventry’s most sought-after commuter hotspots, after city planners greenlit a new station on the extended Coventry to Leamington rail line. The announcement, confirmed by Warwickshire County Council on Friday morning, unlocks hundreds of acres for fast-tracked residential development and brings new urgency to local infrastructure plans.
The decision comes as Coventry faces mounting pressure for family homes within easy reach of employment in both Coventry city centre and Birmingham. The area around Broad Lane and Banner Lane has seen a surge of speculative development applications since Network Rail’s plans for the "West Coventry Spur" firmed up last winter. The new Eastern Green station—set between Tile Hill and Berkswell—will mean direct trains into Coventry station in under 10 minutes and into Birmingham New Street in just 27 minutes.
The Council points to housing need as a driving force. “Demand has shot up,” said a planning officer from Coventry City Council, referencing the city’s latest Housing and Economic Needs Assessment. With inventory tight in Finham and Earlsdon, expanding supply in the western corridor is seen as crucial. Local developer O’Brien Homes has already submitted proposals for a 480-home mixed-use scheme on Allesley Green's southern edge, promising 20% affordable units and a new GP surgery should outline permission be granted this September.
Average values in the CV5 postcode area have climbed 12% year-on-year to £292,000, according to Land Registry data from May 2026. Agents at Loveitts and Shortland Horne say interest in off-plan plots near the proposed station is "fiercer than anything since the Bishopsgate expansion a decade ago." The City Council projects at least 2,100 new homes will be built within a 1.5-mile radius of the station by 2031. Local transport upgrades will include a revamped cycle lane on Tile Hill Lane, new bus stands at Station Approach and a £3 million overhaul of Pickford Brook Park aimed at families who move in over the next 24 months.
But traffic concerns remain. Broomfield Road residents, reached by The Daily Coventry, worry about increased congestion at the A45 junction. The city’s transport plan earmarks £8.4 million for road widening and three new pedestrian crossings to address the expected rise in car journeys.
First train services to and from Eastern Green station could be running by September 2028, if contractors break ground on schedule next March. Local buyers wanting to register early interest in homes close to the station can sign up with developers via the City Council’s new housing portal, which launched last week. Planning meetings are scheduled throughout autumn, with initial roadworks likely to affect traffic between Eastern Green Road and the A4114. Existing residents can keep track of planning applications and consultation events at Coventry.gov.uk/planning.
