Lap swimmers across Coventry are swapping gym walls for water under open skies, as the city’s outdoor pools and secluded rock pools draw record numbers this summer.
This surge in al fresco activity comes as locals seek fresh ways to keep fit and combat seasonal stress—especially with schools breaking up and families looking to make the most of longer evenings. With temperatures hovering above 22C in recent weeks and water quality ratings steadily improving, outdoor venues are stepping up their offerings for hearty exercise and cool relief.
Leading the pack is Coventry’s celebrated Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre Lido on Fairfax Street. This 50-metre open-air pool, a rare survivor of Britain’s mid-century lido tradition, was fully refurbished in 2021 and now offers dedicated lap lanes every morning, including weekends. Entry is £7.10 for adults (a single swim) or just £50 for a monthly swim pass, with discounts available for students and over-60s. The lido opens at 6:30am daily, giving early birds a peaceful start to their days.
For a brush with nature, local open-water swimmers are rediscovering Ryton Pools Country Park, a few miles southeast of the city centre off Leamington Road. Here, a deep, spring-fed pool bordered by mature trees caters to strong swimmers from mid-May until September. While not man-made or chlorinated, the water is tested weekly by the Friends of Ryton Pools, and swim sessions are supervised by on-site staff. Single-entry swims are £6, with wetsuits mandatory during early and late season.
Another favourite for those seeking a wilder experience: the historic Allesley Rock Pool. Tucked into the woodland borders near Washbrook Lane, Allesley’s shaded rock basin is naturally fed and typically 18–22C in high summer. The pool attracts everything from determined triathletes to social swim clubs like the Cov Clwb Nofio, who host group sessions on Sundays at 8am. There’s no formal charge here, though swimmers are encouraged to join the local club for insurance and water upkeep (£12 per season).
Figures from Coventry City Council reveal outdoor swim entries have nearly doubled over the last three summers, with the Sports and Leisure Lido logging more than 41,000 visits between May and August 2025. Ryton Pools Country Park reported its strongest June on record this year, registering over 4,200 swimmers—a 28% increase from last summer. The rise isn’t just about fitness: surveys by Active Coventry indicate 65% of outdoor swimmers cite improved mood as a key benefit.
Notably, summer memberships to the main lido are up by a fifth on last year, driven by early morning lap swimmers and families alike. Many clubs, such as Cov Clwb Nofio, have added weekday evening sessions for beginners, booking up weeks in advance. Organisers say lap swimming in the open air is both accessible and deeply restorative, appealing to a broad age range.
While some residents remain wary of natural pool hygiene, both Ryton Pools and Allesley Rock Pool publish weekly water quality reports online. First-time swimmers are reminded to check conditions after heavy rain and never swim alone in unsupervised spots.
Considering taking the plunge? Dedicated lap sessions at Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre Lido can be booked via the council’s online portal, or by phone at 024 7683 2426. For Ryton Pools, reserve a slot through the Friends’ website—early mornings tend to sell out first. If you’d like to try Allesley Rock Pool, connect with Cov Clwb Nofio through their Facebook group for updates, water safety tips, and session details.
Whether you’re a lifelong swimmer or tempted to test a few laps this summer, Coventry’s rich patchwork of outdoor pools offers a welcome antidote to crowded gyms and busy streets. Pack a towel, some sandals, and plenty of sun cream—the city has never been a better place to get your lengths in under open skies.
