Sprint, jog or stroll—Coventry’s parkrun crowds are back in full force, with War Memorial Park leading the city’s free weekly running scene. Over 500 locals turned out at the Earlsdon parkrun last Saturday, making it the city’s most popular outdoor fitness gathering for the third month straight, according to event volunteers.
The city’s growing appetite for accessible exercise has surged since the pandemic, with local health experts pointing to group fitness as a crucial buffer against rising rates of inactivity. June’s heatwave saw an uptick in early-morning parkrun numbers, as residents searched for cooler, social ways to stay active. And with summer promising more extremes, these group 5Ks are drawing in everyone from students pounding Memorial Avenue before work, to families with toddlers perched in pushchairs.
War Memorial Park, just off Kenilworth Road, remains the beating heart of Coventry’s parkrun scene. Starting 9am sharp each Saturday, volunteers welcome regulars and first-timers for two clockwise laps through tree-lined paths and around the sports pitches. The gentle gravel surface and flat terrain make it one of the most accessible runs for all abilities.
Not far away, on the eastern fringe, Coventry University grounds host occasional ‘pop-up parkruns’ in association with the university’s Wellbeing Zone. These sessions often coincide with student welcome weeks or major public health campaigns — check the university’s sports centre calendar for upcoming dates.
According to local organiser data, the flagship War Memorial Park event routinely attracts between 450 and 600 runners each week, a number that swelled to over 720 for April’s 15th anniversary run. The popularity shows no sign of waning: event statistics from parkrun.org.uk recorded Coventry as one of the top ten UK cities for parkrun participation in 2025. And there are no barriers to entry; registration remains free, with participants simply signing up for a barcode online before attending.
To get started, register online at the Parkrun website and print your unique barcode. Bring it with you to Memorial Park (the main entrance is on Kenilworth Road, with bike racks and a car park charging £2.00 for three hours at peak times). Arrive by 8:45am to hear the first-timer briefing, then warm up with fellow Coventry runners under the oaks. The course is fully marshalled, with tail-walkers ensuring that nobody gets left behind.
This summer’s events calendar is packed. War Memorial Park will host themed runs for the city’s upcoming Health and Wellbeing Festival in August, and word is circulating that Longford Park could see its own parkrun pilot before the end of the year.
Rain or shine, these weekly 5Ks are Coventry’s way of coming together for fitness, friendship and fresh air. With the July heat continuing to climb, organisers recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and sun protection. And if running isn’t your thing, volunteer shifts are always open—no speed required.
