Coventry City Council opened two new marked family cycling loops in War Memorial Park on 1 July 2026, each under two kilometres and free of motor traffic.
Warmer weather and longer daylight have drawn more households outdoors this month, and council figures show a 22 percent rise in park visits since May. Parents say they want places where children can ride without crossing main roads such as the A429 Kenilworth Road or the ring road slip lanes.
War Memorial Park on Kenilworth Road offers a flat circuit around the lake and playing fields, with wide tarmac paths and benches every 200 metres. The second option sits at Coombe Abbey Country Park, reached by a quiet section of the Coventry Canal towpath from the bridge at Swanswell. Both sites sit within five miles of central Coventry and connect to residential streets in Earlsdon and Stoke.
Coventry Active, the council’s outdoor programme, runs free Saturday morning sessions at War Memorial Park that include helmet checks and basic route maps. The same group added a monthly family ride from Coombe Abbey to the canal basin at Spon End last spring.
Council data released in June recorded 4,800 participants across its 2025 family cycling events, up from 3,900 the year before. Bike hire at the War Memorial Park kiosk costs £4 for two hours for an adult bike and £3 for a child model, with child seats available for an extra £2.
Beginners can start at the War Memorial Park car park off Kenilworth Road, follow the lake path clockwise, then cross to the playing fields for a second loop. Riders heading to Coombe Abbey should use the canal towpath from Swanswell, which stays level and has a firm surface. Helmets remain compulsory for under-16s on all council sessions, and riders are asked to keep to marked paths during peak afternoon hours.
