More than 11,800 Coventry residents contacted their GP for anxiety or low mood in the 12 months to March 2026, according to NHS Coventry and Rugby data.
The figure reflects rising demand after two years of higher workplace absences in the city’s automotive supply firms and among students at Coventry University.
A GP at practices such as the one on Foleshill Road first rules out physical causes and can prescribe short-term medication or issue an NHS referral. Psychologists at the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust on Clifford Bridge Road deliver structured therapies such as CBT that target specific thought patterns. Counsellors, often based at the Relate centre near Warwick Road, focus on shorter-term listening support without diagnostic assessment.
Patients usually begin with a GP appointment because that route remains free at the point of use and triggers onward referral within the local integrated care system.
The NHS Talking Therapies service in Coventry reported an average wait of seven weeks from GP referral to first psychologist session in the latest quarterly figures. Private counsellor sessions at Earlsdon-based providers charge £48-£55 for a 50-minute slot, while a full psychological assessment through the same private route starts at £120.
Residents on the waiting list can still book an initial GP review on the same day via the online system used by most Tile Hill and Cheylesmore surgeries.
Anyone experiencing sleep disruption lasting more than two weeks, panic attacks or thoughts of self-harm should book a GP appointment within 48 hours rather than self-refer to a counsellor. Those already diagnosed and seeking longer-term skill-building can ask their GP for direct referral to the trust’s psychology team. Shorter-term life-event support, such as bereavement or work stress, can be addressed by booking directly with a local counsellor once the GP has confirmed no medical red flags.
